ARRIVAL INFORMATION

Conference Schedule

The conference begins with registration at 4:00 on Friday October 12. Earlier arrivals are discouraged since there will be another group leaving mid-afternoon. The first main talk (Gabe Rosenberg) will start at 5:10. Those arriving at the airport (or train or bus station) will be met and driven to the conference center by either SUNY math people or a commercial limousine service. Ordinary cabs generally won't make this trip. Since the trip to the center takes roughly 45 minutes, PLEASE TRY TO ARRIVE AT THE AIRPORT BEFORE 3:00 ON FRIDAY, if possible. We can deal with later arrivals, which are sometimes unavoidable, but I can't guarantee to get you there in time for the first talk.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

Follow the appropriate directions below to arrive at the Strauss Residence to register. You can arrive any time after 4:00. If you arrive just in the nick of time for the first talk, park in the lower parking lot and run to the large building on the left.

If you get lost, call the Conference Center at 797-5100 or the SUNYA Math Dept at 442-4602.

FROM SUNYA OR I-90

A) FOR GROUP THEORISTS

STEP 1A (from SUNYA)
Leave the campus to the north and turn right on Washington Avenue. Very shortly, follow the sign for "State Offices", bearing right. (There are two such possible turns: both will work) Follow the road around the State Office complex to the sign that says 85 South and follow the sign.
STEP 1B (from I-90)
Go south on 85 (actually marked 85 west), the only way you can go since 85 terminates at 90.
STEP 2
Go 24.7 miles on route 85. The road becomes rather rural with several well marked turns. (When in doubt, turn right.)

About a half mile before the conference center is the Rensselaerville body shop, a small service garage, on the left. The entrance to the conference center is on the right and is a rather steep uphill. Turn right into the first parking lot and drive up and to the right to the upper parking lot: the building on the right is Strauss.

B) FOR TOPOLOGISTS (The diagram is topologically but not metrically accurate. Geometers might want to ask for help.)

FROM THE NORTH (I-87)

Take the I-90 east exit from I-87 (the Northway) and follow STEP 1A or 1B above as appropriate to your persuasion.

FROM THE SOUTHWEST (via I-88)

Get off I-88 at Exit 22. Take Route 145 South and go 7.3 miles (heading toward Middleburgh). At the red blinking light bear to your left (following signs for Route 145 South) and go over green bridge. Immediately after the bridge, bear right at the traffic light. You are now going through the village of Middleburgh. Go 9.3 miles on Route 145 from traffic light and turn left at Conover's General Store (large green building on left) in the village of Livingstonville. You are now on Schoharie County Route 19A (road is winding and narrow) and go 3.5 miles (now road name changes to Albany County Route 353). Continue for about 4 more miles on Route 353 and bear left at the "Y" and go .3 mile (heading down into the village of Rensselaerville). Go over small bridge by gristmill and go .1 mile and turn left onto Pond Hill Road (large yellow house on corner of Pond Hill Road and Main Street). Turn right at the Rensselaerville Institute white entrance sign onto the Conference Campus. Pass the first building on your right and straight ahead is the Weathervane restaurant - go around the right side of the Weathervane and up the hill to Strauss.

FROM NEW YORK CITY AND POINTS SOUTH

Leave I-87 (NY State Thruway) at Exit 21, Catskill. Turn left after the toll booth and proceed for .5 mile to the right turn entrance to Route 23 West. Proceed west on Route 23 for approximately 8 miles; at the traffic light turn right onto Route 32 North. Follow Route 32 about 9 miles to Greenville (traffic light). Stay on Route 32 for 2 miles past the Greenville traffic light to the intersection of Route 405. The Shepard Farm Hotel will be on your right at the intersection. Turn left onto Route 405 for 4.5 miles where Route 405 merges with Route 402: turn left onto Route 402 and proceed .6 mile, bearing right at the fork to pick up Route 351. Proceed 4.4 miles on Route 351 to Rensselaerville. Once in the village, turn right up Pond Hill Road to the top of the hill and turn right at the Rensselaerville Institute white entrance sign onto the Conference Campus. Pass the first building on your right and straight ahead is the Weathervane restaurant - go around the right side of the Weathervane and up the hill to Strauss.

NOTE: I-90 (east-west) and I-87 (north-south) meet transversally just off the top left corner of the map above. The Thruway passes through the intersection non-tranversely from the west to the south changing number in the process.
