Pointers to Selected Mathematical Materials

What is the dimension of the universe?
Brian Greene, who is Professor of Mathematics and Physics at Columbia University has brought current developments in theoretical physics to the forefront of popular culture with his 1999 book The Elegant Universe, published by W. W. Norton & Co.

String theorists, whose subject is based on a great deal of the "pure" mathematics developed in the 20th century without particular regard to physics, hope to be able to realize Albert Einstein's dream of unifying general relativity and quantum mechanics.

Brian Greene is scheduled to speak here at the University on Tuesday, November 30, under the auspices of The New York Writer's Institute.
