An important problem in combinatorial representation theory is to find combinatorial bases of standard (i.e., integrable highest weight) modules for affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. These bases should give rise to "fermionic" formulas for the characters.
I will present an approach, in which certain fermionic formulas are obtained, but without any reference to bases of standard modules. Some concrete results in the case of the ADE-series of affine Lie algebras will be also presented.
Some parts of my talk are based on a recent joint work with C. Calinescu (OSU) and J. Lepowsky (Rutgers).
