University at Albany Department of Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium/CRANTS Speaker: Professor Jessica Sidman, Mount Holyoke College Time: Friday, April 23, at 4:30pm Place: Earth Sciences Bldg. 143, Univ. at Albany Title: Equations defining subspace arrangements Abstract: A subspace arrangement X is a finite union of linear subspaces in a vector space of dimension n. Subspace arrangements arise in diverse areas of mathematics including invariant theory, graph theory, and topology. I will discuss some relationships between the defining equations of subspace arrangements and problems in algebra and combinatorics. I will also talk about the defining equations of an arbitrary arrangement and then discuss some arrangements whose defining equations can be described explicitly. Refreshments at 4:00 pm in ES 152.
