CAPITAL REGION ALGEBRA/NUMBER THEORY SEMINAR Speaker: Pedro Teixeira, Union College Time: Wednesday, April 30, at 4:30pm Place: Bailey Hall 100, Union College Title: Polynomials, Power Series and p-Fractals Abstract: In this talk I'll introduce some apparently simple questions about polynomials and power series for which no answer is known. However, when the coefficients of the polynomials or power series are in a finite field, the questions lead to mysterious real-valued functions, and there is experimental evidence that these functions have self-similarity properties that completely characterize them. In some cases this can actually be proven. (This is joint work with Paul Monsky). Refreshments at 4:15pm in Math. Dept. Lounge, 2nd floor. PS. Since this is the last meeting of CRANTS for this semester, we plan to go for dinner after the talk. Please plan to join us!
