CAPITAL REGION ALGEBRA/NUMBER THEORY SEMINAR Speaker: Hara Charalambous, Univ. at Albany Time: Wednesday, October 23, at 4:30pm, Place: ES 152A, University at Albany, Title: The denominator of the Poincare series for multigraded rings. Abstract: The Poincare series of a ring captures the ranks of the free modules in a minimal free resolution of the quotient field. It is well known that the the Poincare series for R/I when R is a polynomial ring and I is a monomial ideal is rational. In this talk we discuss the coefficients of the denominator. We show 1) that the coefficients come from the set of the least common multiples of the generators of I and 2) we show that their sign is determined by the number of connected components of the graph formed when we join the generators that are not coprime.
