CAPITAL REGION ALGEBRA/NUMBER THEORY SEMINAR Speaker: David Vella, Skidmore College Time: Wednesday, April 3, at 4:30pm, Place: Earth Science Bldg 152A, University at Albany Title: Dimensions of Support Varieties of Induced Modules for Algebraic Groups (Part III) Abstract: An important recent development in modular representation theory is the notion of a support variety of a module. First introduced for finite groups by J.F. Carlson, and later extended to the case of modular Lie algebras by E. Friedlander and B. Parshall, this notion was finally extended to infinitesimal algebraic groups in 1997 by Friedlander, Suslin & Bendel. However, aside from some early calculations by J. Jantzen in case of the Special Linear Group, very few actual calculations of these varieties have been carried out. In this talk I will describe how using a concept of 'generic dimension' of a graded module, first developed by B. Parshall & J.P. Wang, one can obtain bounds on the dimensions of support varieties of induced modules. In recent collaborative work with B. Parshall and D. Nakano, this has led to some new calculations of support varieties. Refreshments at 4:15 pm in ES 152.
