CAPITAL REGION ALGEBRA/NUMBER THEORY SEMINAR Speaker: Alex Tchernev, Univ. at Albany Time & Place: Wednesday, February 14, at 4:30pm, in ES 152A Title: Powers of Gorenstein ideals of grade three Abstract: We will discuss the notion of Gorenstein ideals, and in particular the Buchsbaum-Eisenbud structure theorem, which expresses a Gorenstein ideal of grade three in terms of pfaffians of an appropriate alternating matrix. Finally, we will describe a family of complexes that are "approximately" resolutions for the powers of a given Gorenstein ideal of grade three, and we will give necessary and sufficient conditions for these complexes to be actually resolutions. This talk will be self contained and assumes no prior knowledge of the subject under discussion. Refreshments at 4:15pm in ES 152.
