Most of the magic that you see is due to Charles Goldfarb, the inventor of SGML, James Clark, the author of "nsgmls", and David Megginson, the author of "sgmlspl".
Eventually I would like to be able to flow the Gellmu version directly to "text/plain" (without loss of "content", of course). The stage 3 codelet package that I have for "text/plain" is not yet good enough. Any volunteers? Probably it will be necessary to re-code "fwid" from C to Perl in order to avoid problems with backquoting arbitrary printable ascii strings.
The whole stage 3 set-up should probably be coded in Elisp and eventually in C.
