BULLETIN DESCRIPTION:

Modules over a principle ideal domain, semisimple rings and modules, Wedderburn's theorem, tensor products, the Hom functor, projective and injective modules, localization. Prerequisite: Mat 520A.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

Between Math 520A and Math 520B it is expected that about 80% of the syllabus for the Preliminary Ph.D. exam in algebra should be covered.

The instructor reserves the option of substituting “take-home” exams for the scheduled midterm and final examinations. In either event the exam will be due at a time announced with its distribution.

ATTENDANCE:

Attendance at class meetings is a requirement for passing the course unless the student has been granted a special exception in advance. Unexcused absence may result in failure or grade reduction. There will be no retrospective excused absences from tests except for compelling emergencies and religious holidays.
